Celebrating a new Milestone: Sargassum Project. Notebook for first year high school students

After much work and dedication being done behind the scenes, we are extremely excited to share a new milestone in our community and outreach efforts. In partnership with eight participating schools from Mexico, we have now finalized an agreed version of the “Sargassum Project. Notebook for first year high school students”!

How are the books designed?

The concept of the “Sargassum Project. Notebook for first year high school students” was born out of a desire to provide a meaningful, educational resource that addresses pressing environmental issues. Co-developed by Dr. Cristina Argudin Violante, the books contain a variety of teaching materials for secondary schools based in the Mexican Caribbean, in line with educational guidelines. They aim to provide a foundation for teachers to explore the challenge of invasive sargassum (brown seaweed) and its impact on coastal regions, through curriculum subjects like science, math, language, culture, history and more.

What’s next?

We are currently in the process of printing +1000 copies of the “Sargassum Project. Notebook for first year high school students”. They will be distributed to our participating schools in time for the launch events scheduled between the 18-20th September 2024. These events will mark the official introduction of the books in the schools’ curricula of eight Mexican’ schools. We are extremely excited to see how the books will be received by the students and believe that they will provide an exciting opportunity for all the students, teachers and scientists involved!

Our vision and goals

Through the Seaweed School & Community Network we want to address environmental challenges, while fostering a sense of community and engaging citizens in our research. We believe that this new step we are taking with our partnered Mexican schools, represents a significant milestone in expanding our impact on local communities affected by seaweed influxes. We hope to replicate the work done with these schools, in other countries.
